Up Close And Personal

What an amazing display of Orca whales hunting for salmon VERY near the shore on Vashon Island in Washington State. Apparently there were some 80 whales from the J, K, and L pods.

I’ve seen several Orcas while on a ferry or from the shore the San Juan Islands, but never this close. Amazing!

Is this racist? Donald Trump Thinks So…

Donald Trump accused Jon Stewart of vicious racism against Herman Cain in a Tuesday web video.

Stewart mocked Cain on Monday for his somewhat shambolic response to a story that he faced sexual harassment charges during the 1990s. Stewart mostly seemed to be making double entendres, but Trump saw his take, and his brief impersonation of Cain, as bigoted.

“How come Jon Stewart gets away with a very very racist rant against Herman Cain?” he wondered. “…It’s not what he said but the way he said it. The tone of his voice, the inflection. Unbelievable! Anybody else, deep deep trouble.”

Trump called for Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to denounce Stewart, and asked “sleepy-eyed Chuck Todd” to criticize the “horrible, horrible thing” the comedian had done. He said Stewart had been “insulting” to African Americans and should apologize.

Buh-bye Seattle Alaskan Way Viaduct…

Time-lapse video of Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct coming down

The folks at the Puget Sound Business Journal had a bird’s-eye view of the Alaskan Way Viaduct demolition this week, and photographer Marcus Donner documented the controversial roadway’s demise one picture at a time.

The journal’s offices are based in the downtown Norton Building, and that’s where Donner set up his camera. From the building’s 13th floor, he took a photo every two or three minutes for five days to make this video.

The viaduct was deemed unsafe and unfit to survive a major earthquake. It’s been a very controversial and politically heated debate as to how to replace it. The proposals ranged from a new surface boulevard to a new viaduct to a tunnel. The tunnel camp won the debate, but many Seattleites are unhappy about it.

Hack a Soda Bottle into a Solar Light

The video above shows how a man in an impoverished urban area in the Philippines created a solar light to brighten the densely-packed windowless homes that are dark inside even when the sun is shining brightly. The method involves making a roof cutout to support the bottle and filling the bottle with water and a little bleach. This solution can also help add some light to garden sheds and any other type of small outbuilding without electricity.

Once a cutout is made in the metal roofing material the soda bottle is attached and a sealant is applied. Then the bottle is filled with water and a teaspoon or so of bleach to kill any bacteria in the water.

The Filipino man serves as an example that life hacking can exist anywhere. Because of one bright idea he has a business and hundreds of people have a cheap way to bring light into their lives. Video by Marlon Bucsit.

Offbook: Steampunk, A Mini Documentary by PBS Arts

PBS has created this wonderful documentary about the Steampunk world. I’m fascinated by the originality, the creativeness, and the mystery evoked by the Steampunk participants.

Road Trip: Day One

Day One of Bill and James’ road trip to Peoria, AZ and back. We left the Seattle area at about 9:30am and arrived in Canyonville, OR at around 4:00pm. The weather was a mixed bag, from torrential rain to bright sunshine.

Had a little trouble with the webcam setup… the power inverter didn’t quite have enough oompf to keep the netbook going, and we lost the video from home to the first part of Oregon. A quick trip to Radio Shack solved the problem.

Dry Run… Time Lapse

Bill and I will be leaving tomorrow for a three week road trip to Peoria, AZ and back. We’ll be visiting several National Parks and plan on documenting the trip. This is a practice run of the webcam I set up to do time lapse movies of the entire trip. I’ll post them as I can, most of the hotels along the way have WiFi. Should be a lot of fun!
