I just found out that I’m obsessed…

I enjoy photography. A lot. It’s caused me to look at the world differently. It’s caused me to truly see what I’m seeing. It gives me an outlet for the artist within; something that I didn’t have while raising and supporting a family.

For almost fifty years, I’ve waited for a time when I could just let my creativity freely fly. Raising a family and working at a career takes time and focus. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret a second of my life before retirement.

But now it’s my turn. My time. I cherish it.

So today, when I was told that taking pictures is all I think about, it hurt.

The implication was that I don’t do much of anything else productive. And he’s embarrassed when I see a photo-op in public and I pull out my camera to capture it.

Maybe I am obsessed with photography. So be it. I’ve learned that to really do something right, I need to be immersed in it.

My turn!

Timothy Speaks…

“Admit it. You aren’t like them. You’re not even close. You may occasionally dress yourself up as one of them, watch the same mindless television shows as they do, maybe even eat the same fast food sometimes. But it seems that the more you try to fit in, the more you feel like an outsider, watching the “normal people” as they go about their automatic existences. For every time you say club passwords like “Have a nice day” and “Weather’s awful today, eh?”, you yearn inside to say forbidden things like “Tell me something that makes you cry” or “What do you think deja vu is for?”. Face it, you even want to talk to that girl in the elevator. But what if that girl in the elevator (and the balding man who walks past your cubicle at work) are thinking the same thing? Who knows what you might learn from taking a chance on conversation with a stranger? Everyone carries a piece of the puzzle. Nobody comes into your life by mere coincidence. Trust your instincts. Do the unexpected. Find the others…”

Timothy Leary – 1969

Nippy?

I went to Kohl’s department store today. So hot outside and the coolness of the AC in the store felt good.
I didn’t think it was THAT cold though…

Seven Turrets

These Turret shells are from the Turretella genus of sea snails that prefers living on muddy or sandy bottoms.

I believe that they were used as a sort of currency in ancient times.

I want my Baby Backs…

Going, going… GONE!

Last night’s Baby Back Pork Ribs dinner was delicious!

After removing the tough membrane from the concave side (the hardest part of the prep), I dry rubbed the ribs with a concoction of brown sugar, cayenne pepper, Hungarian paprika, onion powder, pepper, salt, more cayenne pepper, and dry mustard. They sat in the fridge basking in the rub overnight and went on the grill at 1:30 the next afternoon.

My grill was able to keep a constant temperature of about 275 degrees with just one burner turned all the way low. I put a pan of water-soaked mesquite wood chips on the burner side and the ribs on the “cool” side, closed the lid and left them to get happy!

Four and a half hours later, I knew they were done when I saw the meat pulling away from the bone ends. So I doused the ribs with some Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce and let them cook for another half hour.

The results? Absolute perfection! Fall-off-the-bone tender and moist. The taste was just a nice amount of heat and sweet that didn’t overpower the pork. And the mesquite smoke was wonderful. I think I spoiled myself!

Some folks like their ribs more chewy… not me, I’m in the fall off the bone camp. 275 degrees for five hours did the trick nicely. For the chewy crowd, BBQ them at a higher temperature for a shorter time… like 375 degrees for an hour or so.

And YES, I ate them all!

Mouthwatering!

White Flowers on Black

A simple still life with some white flowers, an empty Patron tequila bottle, and some black velvet.
I shot this for Project Flickr… the theme is “Rule of Thirds”. It’s pretty minimal, but I like minimal!

I set it up my “new” taboret that I found at a second-hand store. Just realized… ‘my new taboret’ rhymes with ‘Raspberry Beret’… I may have to paint it!

NY Strip Steak & Brussels Sprouts – Project Flickr: 8/52 – Patterns

Hot off my grill! The steak is nicely patterned with criss-cross grill marks and perfectly rare.

I also grilled the Brussels Sprouts on skewers and tossed them in an onion-bacon marmalade before serving. The marmalade will make a Brussels Sprouts hater into a believer!

The recipe can be seen here: Patio Daddio BBQ
